Inverted Goals

Image
"An inverted goal is essentially the goal that leads to the final predetermined outcome that you want to accomplish.” ~ Hal Elrod Today is the last Friday of January. Contrary to previous experience, this January has flown way faster than expected and out of 365 days, you now have 27 less days to work on your goals. Are they set already? Are you working on them yet? First quarter is one third gone! As the first month comes to an end, not only am I putting in place systems and habits to ensure I become the person who achieves the goals I have set for myself, but I am also re-calibrating and redefining my goals. Listening to Hal Elrod’s podcast episode 409, I learnt about Inverted Goals and I think you’ll enjoy one more trip to your goal list. My dictionary defines ‘to invert’ as to turn upside down or to reverse the order of something. Hal defines inverted goals as those that focus on a predetermined process as opposed to focusing on a predetermined outcome. This goes co...

Be A Beginner

Image
“Become a beginner again. We lose something wonderful when it becomes more important to us to be the one who knows than to be the one who’s open to the everyday wonders around us. Those who think they know it all have no way of finding out they don’t.” ~ Anonymous How does it feel to be a beginner at anything? The first day at __________ always feels awkward until you make a few friends, learn a few ropes and generally get the hang of your direction around stuff. But what if you are always a beginner? Try to imagine that scenario for school or work. . . not nice. However, there are situations where you can always be a beginner and love it. As a crafting enthusiast, I find myself always learning and starting from scratch on a number of tangents that then lead to interesting discoveries. It’s boring crocheting the same design twice, baking a cake the same way twice or drawing a tree the same way over and over again. The real fun comes in discovering what variations work an...

Questions to Ponder

“ He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how .” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche I have been an ardent follower of Robin Sharma since I first read The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari many years ago. He introduced me to the 5am club and the concept of leading without a title among many other gems I have gleaned from his work in the years I’ve known him. As this year was starting out, he sent out a new year’s message that got me thinking about my plans for the year ahead. In considering 2022 and your plans for it, Robin asks us to think deeply about 4 questions that should guide our planning. First, who must I become to have the year that I want? Do I need to cultivate generosity, an attitude of gratitude, become a hard worker, a learner . . . who must I become in order to achieve what I am setting out to achieve? What character traits will get me to my destination and which ones must I leave behind? (Yes because there are some that will pull you down if carried along.) Secondly, wh...

Arise and Shine

Image
“ And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been ” ~ Rainer Maria Rilke Happy New Year and cheers to another trip around the sun. You have made it this far and that is no mistake. You were meant to be here, now, at such a time as this. It’s been a busy week setting up systems and breaking down annual goals into their bite sized components. Taking apart lofty ideals and coming up with realistic task lists and time spans for the completion of every task. And to be truthful, this is not a task I enjoy doing. Largely because it forces me to drill down what I say I want to do and face every step, activity and resource I will need in order to be able to accomplish that goal. So I hauled boxes and sorted my stash of books to come up with a reading list, and now I’m glad I already have a Miracle Morning habit because my reading hour is now planned out. My fitness and health goals were next and this required I find and download workouts, check gear and plan out a s...
