Distractions

Image
“ An addiction to distraction is the end of creative production .” ~ Robin Sharma We are already 4 weeks into the new year and in a few days, the first month will be gone. Just like in previous years, time waits for no man (and has no sympathy for women either). This week I’m pondering why some weeks win the ‘’week of the year” award and others whoosh past like they did not even stop by to consume 168 hours. I love doing to-do lists weekly, daily, and sometimes task-wise. I am most productive when I can see on paper what needs to be done and cross off what has been done and see what is pending. But still, some weeks I’m ahead of the list and some I don’t even crack a measly 20% of the list. It boils down to what distractions happen or which ones I allow into my life. A distraction is defined as something that makes it difficult to pay attention or that draws attention away from familiar concerns. Also, distraction is the process of diverting an individual’s attention from ...

But . . . The Cop-Out

Image
“ The only thing standing between you and your goals is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it. ” ~ Jordan Belfort Stories. We love stories – hearing them, telling them, reading them. But we especially love crafting and repeating bullshit stories about why we can’t get something done or see something we committed to do through. Those stories also go by other names such as excuses, alibis, justifications, defenses, and rationalization. My creativity spans many genres and storytelling is one of them. I admit that I have told countless stories in my life – to others and myself. Mostly badly crafted fiction, convincingly packaged. However, in this decade of my life, some of those stories are returning to haunt and taunt me and I am forced to face their frivolity head-on. Partly because ‘consequences are grandchildren’ (as the ancestors used to say) and I’m old enough to have some. And partly because the complexities of reality do not allow...

The Two Most Powerful Warriors

Image
" The two most powerful warriors are patience and time. ” ~ Leo Tolstoy “ Everything comes in time to him who knows how to wait. ” ~ Leo Tolstoy Once upon a time, a yogi used to sit at the side of a river bank all day, muttering and shouting in a loud voice from time to time – “You will get whatever you want.” Passersby thought he was insane and would laugh at him as they went their way. One day, a young unemployed man was passing that way and stopped to listen when the yogi shouted. When he heard the yogi say ‘you will get whatever you want’, the young man was intrigued and came to where the yogi was seated. He asked him, “Will I be able to get whatever I want? Can you give me what I want?” The yogi responded, “Yes, but first, tell me what it is you want.” “I want to become a big diamond dealer one day. Can you fulfill my wish?” the young man asked. The yogi responded “I will give you a diamond and a pearl. Make as many diamonds and pearls as you want.” He t...

Seven Habits to Encode in 2023

“ Cherish your vision. Cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts. For out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment, of these, if you but remain true to them, your world will, at last, be built. ” ~ James Allen We are well into the year; it is not ‘new’ anymore. Are you still in holiday mode or have you hit the ground running? If you’re running, do you have a plan or are you just rabidly going back and forth? Today I’ll give us some structure, courtesy of my very dependable success coach, Robin Sharma. Robin sends out a regular newsletter to his subscribers and at the beginning of this year he sent out a list of 7 habits to encode to make this year wow. Habit one is to write in a journal before you sleep. I have been a regular ‘journal-er’ for many years but not as consistent as he suggests. I don’t always pen something daily, and certai...
