Doing Life Accompanied

“It’s better to have a partner than go it alone. Share the work, share the wealth. And if one falls down, the other helps; but if there’s no one to help, tough!” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 The Message

Are you trying to do life all alone? Do you have that anchor person you can go to when everything is falling apart and they can speak a word or hold your hand or offer an ear?

This past week I found myself in a fix that I could not wriggle myself out of. What’d you know? A friend was going through the same conundrum. They called me first, I listened, and then I owned up to suffering the same predicament.

The next thing we had to figure out was how to get each other and ourselves out of the funk we were in. That’s what I call the “so what now?” phase. This is where your reset practices come into play. What do you do when you find yourself in a jam? Watch TV all day? Sleep like a cat (23-hours a day!!)? Load up on junk food and binge till you drop? Or the classic drown your sorrows? How well do your reset practices reset you? In this case, we both agreed on a 24-hour reset practice that has served us well in the past and we made a check-in date for the next day at 6pm. I’m glad to say, we had a solution at the end of the reset and traffic is moving again.

Granted, life will throw you an occasional curve ball. Are you ready to meet it head on, keep your head up and move on in victory? Or are you just cruising and a great candidate for being blown off the course with no idea what happened! Do you have a person who can talk you out of a rut, walk with you and encourage you?

Working out is a great way to start or end the day. A long walk or a hike into the wild can give you time to think through issues, connect with nature and re-centre yourself.  Prayer is a way to surrender to a greater power, the all knowing God that can give you wisdom for the journey and help for the battles. I recently discovered a breathing practice called the Wim Hof breathing technique: priceless. I also have playlists I listen to in different seasons, crochet projects that are just relaxing, solving Sudoku puzzles, reading fiction. . .whatever your magic, find a reset practice that relaxes you, and does not harm your goals or set you back from your path.

But most importantly, cultivate a relationship that can grow with you, grow you and hold you up when you cannot hold yourself up for one reason or another.

"Preparation will relieve you from pressures. Stay prepared and you will not need to worry about pressures” ~Richard Okorie
