Let It Rain
“The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.” ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
The rains are finally here. And they have soaked in enough for it to be muddy. It’s time to take out my sweaters and scarves, and change my bedding to heavy blankets. But not just yet. The fact that it’s raining most nights keeps my cats indoors and the last few nights they have followed me to bed – huge win! (cat lovers will understand)
The other morning, I heard the sound of rain as it started out at around 4am. I got out of bed and grabbed Bernie for a lookout session. It was dark outside but there were already a few people going about their day. The rain drops were coming down hard and occasionally there were flashes of lightning. At a different hour, I might have gone outside and let the rain wash over me but at 4am in the morning, my warm bed was calling me back.
On one hand, the farmers are happy and they are already out in the farms planting. Water and hydro-electricity providers are watching dams fill with glee. The water levels have been too low for too long. But, some people are already crying out – arid areas receiving heavy rainfall are already reporting flash floods. People living in lowlands are being displaced as the water levels rise.
Is there ever a blessing that is 100% a blessing for all? Is it just a matter of perspective or are there actual downsides to things the majority think are great?
Children going to school in the morning will not be happy about a downpour that starts at 4am and carries on until 9am. Workers leaving their offices at 5pm do not want a rainy escort home, especially with the sudden shortage of public transport that rain in this city heralds. Just like a coin, blessings have 2 sides and we don’t always get to choose whether we are on the tails or heads end of things.
That may be the reason why I prepare for all scenarios and pray that I am ready no matter which one finds me. If it rains in the night, Lord may I have a leak-proof roof over my head, a bug-free bed and a warm blanket. If it rains while I’m out and about, may I have warm clothes, a sturdy umbrella and a sunny disposition to keep me dry until I get back home.
Rain is good and rain can be destructive. Bottom line is no matter how long the drought, it will eventually rain. So be prepared for a lot, for little, for whatever will come, be ready.
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. . .It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” ~ Vivian Greene
