Done?. . .Done!

“Now I know what a ghost is. Unfinished business, that’s what.”~ Salman Rushdie Pending stuff. Unfinished business. Incomplete. Not yet done. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, unfinished business is something that a person needs to deal with or work on; something that has not yet been done, dealt with, or completed. And it can be a nag to your brain. Reminders keep popping up at the most inappropriate time; the thought of it sucks your energy and keeps you tired. Sometimes it’s just a nagging feeling of unhappiness about something you can’t really put your finger on. This is called the Zeigarnik effect - we remember better that which is unfinished or incomplete. And we worry about those things in which we have not achieved closure. I’m reminded of several trails that were just difficult to conquer and for two in particular, I finally got to summit on the third attempt. Oh what peace! Finished business! Finally! But fast forward to now, my unfinished business i...

Shine On

All good is hard. All evil is easy. Dying, losing, cheating, and mediocrity is easy. Stay away from easy. ~ Scott Alexander  When the crescent moon was out this week, it shone brightly notwithstanding the fact that we could only see a fraction of it. The full moon shines just as brightly, only now there’s more of the moon to see. Life consists of troughs and peaks and the journey from one to the next is never ending until we say goodbye. As a hiker, I live for the summits but before the ultimate reward, there are steep climbs, slippery descents, blessed flat lands, rocky paths and bushy routes that sometimes hide stinging nettle among their leaves. Ouch! But despite the journey, the summit is always promised if you will persevere to the end. Daily living is no different. Some days are great, others are cursed. But if you set a goal, all of those days add up to the target date. And that is where the crux of the matter lies. How do you show up in between phases...

Of Sunsets And Sunrises

Oh it's my day, to do anything I want to It's my time, and I'll use it any way I want to It's my life and I'm responsible for every action It's all mine, my day, my time, my life Tarrus Riley - My Day (the chorus) This is a photo of a sunset somewhere at the Kenyan coast. The sun had done it's duty for the day and it was going to sleep. I still had lots to do and it would be a few hours before I'd follow the sun to my rest.  Last week I met with my accountability partner to discuss my 2021 goals and plans. They are now out there and at least one person will come calling to find out how I performed and why. That is scary! But I've been at this process for some years now and it's borne many fruits for both of us and forced me to be honest about how I spend my time - the 365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months I get every January 1st. Then I went and commited to a 100-day plan and the nightmare begun.  I have a lot to do and anything I consider my "fr...

The Moon Rise

"Whenever you want to achieve something, keep your eyes open, concentrate and make sure you know exactly what it is you want. No one can hit their target with their eyes closed." ~ Paulo Coelho, The Devil and Miss Prym I watched the last moon rise of 2020 with awe. She came up, bit by bit, round, huge and white. Like she's always done. Meanwhile, the crickets and the stars were also beginning their part of the daily show.  We're the only ones who stopped in 2020. Nature and it's Creator carried on. The seasons changed when they should have, but for us. . .reggae was paused.  And the clock kept ticking and we're now in 2021. Happy New Year. It is however a "new beginning" like none I've had before. This is one I'm not excited to be part of. Fear of the unknown has stalked me into the new year.  I finally got some goals down but they are not audacious and 'gynormous' as Lisa Nichols advised me to set them. However, one thing 2020 taught...
