This Is Me

I'm not a stranger to the dark
Hide away, they said
'Cause we don't want your broken parts
I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars
Run away, they said
No one will love you as you are

But I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me

Another round of bullets hits my skin
Well, fire away 'cause today, I won't let the shame sink in
We are bursting through the barricades
And reaching for the sun (we are warriors)
Yeah, that's what we've become

And I know that I deserve your love
There's nothing I'm not worthy of

This is brave, this is bruised
This is who I'm meant to be, this is me

These are lyrics to a song that was part of the soundtrack to The Greatest Showman (2017) movie, sung by Keala Settle playing the bearded lady, Lettie Lutz. The movie was based on the life story of P. T. Barnum, an 1800s American showman and owner of the Barnum & Bailey Circus.

The two characters who star in this song are ‘freaks’ by natural standards; a bearded lady and a dwarf man (played by Sam Humphrey). In the story they both had to be convinced over and over again to come out of hiding and join the circus.

How many times do we consider a part of us a freak of nature and immediately look to hide away, ashamed of our broken parts and scars? Last Friday I wrote about loving ourselves into growth. This week I’m asking us to love ourselves into finding the love of others . . . because someone out there will find our scars inspiring. Someone out there is waiting for me and you to show them that we are still living and breathing despite our broken parts. In fact, that one is waiting to hear how we overcame our handicap so they can find inspiration to overcome theirs. Your scar has a purpose to fulfil in your life and may even be your life’s purpose.

Read those lyrics again. Do they speak to your fearful self? Remember that fear is a type of laziness. Overcome it and grow.

I am brave. I am bruised. I am who I’m meant to be. This is me.

This is brave. This is bruised. This is who I’m meant to be. This is me.

Every human being must have a point at which he stands against the culture, where he says, this is me and the damned world can go to hell.”~Rollo May
