Are You Committed?

We cannot be sure of having something to live for unless we are willing to die for it.” ~ Che Guevara

In less than 48 hours we’ll all be either taking out the hankies to wish a teary-eyed goodbye to 2022 or sweeping it away with the biggest brooms we can find as we wish it’s passing good riddance. I’ll be in neither camp – I’ll go to bed at my usual 10 pm, say my prayers for a restful night, and hope to wake up to another day. It doesn’t matter either way because I can’t change what’s already been so I’m better off saving my energy for what is yet to come.

You will probably have reviewed your year by now and set your goals for the next one or will be doing that in the next week or so. If you’re anything like the majority of people, you will have made resolutions for the next year. Motivation usually runs high in January as the collective psyche of humanity starts with grand intentions – to make this your best year yet.

But, we all know that that motivation does not last. And in some cases, it wanes off pretty fast – probably by the time you conquer your first traffic jam in January. Fret not, help is here.

Hal Elrod, the author of Miracle Morning, defines motivation as a commitment. “When you are committed to something, you are motivated to do whatever it takes to achieve that thing, whether you feel like it or not.” He contends that taking action on something you are committed to achieving will result in the motivation you need to fuel your momentum.

Determine what is important to you and what must be achieved to make your time on earth fulfilling. Then commit to doing whatever needs to be done to achieve it. Go a step further and share the commitment with a person you respect – someone whom you will not want to offend or whose respect you value. Having someone to keep you accountable is also a great motivator. Have it all written down and make time to review it often.

One of my commitments for 2023 is to pen another 52 episodes of Kui’s Musings. There you have it! We’ll have another go at it for the 3rd year . . . so help me God.

Happy New Year y’all.

You may not be to blame for everything that happens to you, but you are the only person that is responsible for turning things around.” ~ Hal Elrod
