Do You Trust Me?

Once, a man was walking on a rope holding a long bamboo stick, high up in the sky. He had his son sitting on his shoulders while doing this.

Hundreds of people were watching this with bated breath.

The man was carefully taking his steps, battling strong winds, risking his life and that of his son.

The crowd jumped with joy when the man walked over the rope and reached the endpoint, completing the whole distance. They started clapping and whistling, seeing that he had successfully completed his breathtaking performance.

On getting down, people crowded around him asking to shake his hand and taking selfies with him. After indulging a few of them, he came to the mic and got the attention of the crowd. He asked them, “Do you believe I can do this again?”

The crowd shouted, “Yes!”

Again, the man asked, “Do you have firm faith?”

The crowd shouted, “Yes, sure. We can even bet that you can do it successfully again.”

The man, “You have complete confidence in my skills, don’t you?”

The crowd, “Yes we do!”

The man said, “Ok. Could someone in the crowd please give me your child to carry on my shoulders as I go across for the second time?”

On hearing this, a palpable silence spread across the crowd.

Those who had their children with them started shoving them behind and out of sight. The man watched excitement turn into doubt and fear, and the crowd started to move further away from him.

He got back on the microphone.

“Are you scared? You had just said you could bet that I would be able to go over the rope successfully again.”

After watching the retreating crowd for a few more moments, the man gave his final address.

“You have confidence but don’t trust or have faith that I can do this. That is why you got worried and stressed and got silent. Similarly, in life, people do believe in God but don’t have complete faith. That is why they say they believe in God until a situation where they have to trust him arises.”

Don’t be like those faithless people. The start and end quotes today are a good place to return. Read them again.

Horse and Buggy Days

  “ I am old enough to enjoy a bit of nostalgia, but wise enough to know that there haven’t been any “good ol’ days” since Eden (the garden, not the prime minister). ” ~ Ron Brackin During my devotion this week, I found myself reminiscing about the ‘good ol’ days’. One of the verses I’d read had put me in that frame of mind and I rested there a while before reality called me back. The verse was from Habakkuk 3:2, which reads “Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.” (NIV) I had been reading a news article before I read my Bible that day, and it’s easy to see why that verse jumped out at me and sent me into the land of Nostalgia.
