The Horizon: Are You Disturbed?

A dream is the bearer of a new possibility, the enlarged horizon, the great hope.” Howard Thurman

I am smiling as I work on this post – it seems I have recently turned poetic! And indeed, today I review another poem – this one a Prayer of Sir Francis Drake.

As the year comes to a close, it will soon be time to take stock and budget for another year. Reviews, plans, reorganizations are all in the works, for those who live life strategically. I’m hoping that’s all my readers but if you’re not a life strategist, worry not, I will let you in on a tool that’s been a game changer for several years now. Stay tuned.

Prayer of Sir Francis Drake

Disturb us, Lord, when

We are too well pleased with ourselves,

When our dreams have come true

Because we have dreamed too little,

When we arrived safely

Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when

With the abundance of things we possess

We have lost our thirst

For the waters of life;

Having fallen in love with life,

We have ceased to dream of eternity

And in our efforts to build a new earth,

We have allowed our vision

Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,

To venture on wider seas

Where storms will show your mastery;

Where losing sight of land,

We shall find the stars.

We ask You to push back

The horizons of our hopes;

And to push into the future

In strength, courage, hope, and love.

AMEN

When was the last time you felt disturbed? Was it a good feeling? Did you welcome the unease? Did it irritate you? Why? My prayer for you today is that you will be disturbed.

Disturbed enough to seek truth about that situation where experts are giving you a narrative that leaves you with more questions than answers.

Disturbed about that situation that tugs at your heart but has always been someone else’s unresolved problem.

Disturbed about that comfort zone that you’ve been playing at for the longest time.

Disturbed about what lies in that horizon you see, enough to set sail and head over.

In the 2016 Walt Disney film Moana, the lead character in ‘How Far I’ll Go’ sings –

See the line where the sky meets the sea it calls me

And no one knows, how far it goes

If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me

One day I’ll know

How far I’ll go

May your one day be sooner than you know. Be disturbed. Stay disturbed.

Stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole responsibility on your own shoulders. All the strength and succour you want is within yourself. Therefore make your own future.” ~Swami Vivekananda

  1. Someone called it Divine Discontent and even wrote a book about it. Reminds me of a poem I need to look up called Bother me Lord.
    Thanks for the reminder.
