Walk Away

Merry Christmas to y’all!

It’s finally here – the day that some people I know have been counting down to, all year. As for me, meeeeh. . .it’s just another day as I count down to the end of 2021. Or maybe I’m yet to recover from being rained on last night after my weather forecasting efforts proved to be all too Kenyan!

The year ends in exactly 7 days from today and thankfully my annual review and planning for the next one is already done and dusted. I’m now in reflection mode, asking myself what worked, what did not, who made my year, who was absent without apology, what did I do right, what did I do wrong. . .yes, all those questions and more.

But, they are not just empty ‘I have a asks’[1] – they have a purpose. As I look at what I want to achieve in 2022 (including another 52 episodes of Kui’s Musings)[2] I will be carrying some luggage into 2022 and offloading some in 2021.

Who’s being left? Some people who no longer walk in the spaces I want to be in and are even working hard to get me down to their current spaces. No, I will not be downgrading. I have worked too hard to get here, I am only walking forward and upward. Some habits that have kept me stuck, delayed or absent all together. Once again, I assert that I am captain of my life ship and master of my habits. I will live life consciously as opposed to just drifting along, never questioning why I do what I do. Some beliefs I walked in holding on to tightly will be left as I walk away into 2022. They have proved false for others and I will walk in the faith that they are also false for me, if I put in the work.

There are still a few days to add to that list and a few more days to wrestle with whether I want to let go of my love for mug cakes but I will decide on that as I get in my last walking workouts of the week with Leslie Sansone. Just because the year is ending doesn’t mean it’s time to relax on the good habits, in fact it is time to reinforce them. I’ve also been reading much and this gem from Paulo Coelho is worth sharing:

Walk away from people who put you down.

Walk away from fights that will never be resolved

Walk away from trying to please people who will never see your worth.

The more you walk away from things that poison your soul, the healthier you will be.

There is still one more week before we toast to the new year. Enjoy your weekend as you reflect on the reason for the season and who or what you are walking away from, as the hours count down.

Learning to walk away is hard but staying to suffer is harder.” Mariel Avila

  1. "Some things break your heart but fix your vision." Thankful even for the things I'm walking away from.
